John Cusack Murphy

John Cusack Murphy, 84, of The Woodlands, TX, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 17, 2017.

John was born January 17, 1933 in Chicago, IL to William and Florence (Enright) Murphy.

John married Janet Linkenheld in Chicago on April 25, 1959.

John graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep School in 1950. After graduation, John enlisted and proudly served in the United States Marine Corp from 1951-1955. He served as a Corporal in the Ordnance Division on board the USS Saipan. Upon discharge from the Marines, he trained as an electrician and joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) He began work as a Commercial Union Electrician in Chicago through local IBEW #134. In 1976, John and his family relocated to Conroe, TX where he joined local IBEW #716. Upon his death, John was a 60-year member of the IBEW.

Dad was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and especially his grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and sports fan, and he also enjoyed fishing and being on the water. Once retired, he and Jan looked forward to traveling to annual Marine/Navy Reunions throughout the US where John loved to catch up and tell stories with his military buddies. He was an active member of the Eastex Detachment Marine Corp League #779. Dad freely gave countless hours to support the MCL events and was particularly fond of volunteering for the annual Toys for Tots Charity Drive. John and Jan have been members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church since moving to Texas in 1976.

John is preceded in death by his parents, William and Florence Murphy; sister, Lynn Debrecht; brother, William Murphy; parents-in-law, Edmund and Olivia Linkenheld; sisters-in-law, Donna Murphy and Arlene Linkenheld.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet; four sons, Terry and Janice Murphy of Montgomery, TX, Brian and Trish Murphy of Downingtown, PA, Marty and Angie Murphy of Montgomery, TX, James and Jamie Murphy of Conroe, TX: grandchildren, Garrett and Mason Murphy, Chase and Devin Murphy, Meghan and Faith Murphy, Thomas Pope, Ashley and Justin Coker, Josiah Green; great grandchildren, Thomas and Katherine Pope; sister, Drew Mans; brother, James and Sharon Murphy; cousin, Jerry Shanahan; brothers-in-law, Ed and Karen Linkenheld, Robert Linkenheld and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers are his grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Eastex Detachment Marine Corp League #779.

Please pray for the repose of John’s soul.

Visitation at will be Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 5-8 PM McNutt Funeral Home, 1703 Porter Rd. Conroe, TX with a rosary at 7 PM.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 10:00 AM Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 109 N. Frazier St. Conroe, TX.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to honor John may be considered to MCL Eastex Detachment #779 Scholarship Fund, PO Box 523, Conroe, TX 77305, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, 109 N. Frazier St. Conroe, TX 77301 or a charity of your choice.

The Murphy Family is eternally grateful to St. Joseph’s Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Dad during the last week of his life. We also would like to acknowledge the staff at The Conservatory at Alden Bridge for showing great kindness and hospitality to our family during the past year.
