Obituary for JOSEPH SALVATORE BARBOSSA

Joseph S. Barbossa, good-humored charmer, pie connoisseur, automobile aficionado, and collector of friends, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018.

The friends in his life were innumerable, as he epitomized the phrase ‘He never met a stranger’.

He loved his mother Carmela Ann Barbossa (deceased), who with moxie and fortitude, reared Joe in the Marion Section of Jersey City, NJ surrounded by doting uncles and cousins.

He married the love of his life, Ethel Tarselli, a beautiful registered nurse, over 55 years ago. He quietly appreciated her extraordinary ability to listen to his stories and gracefully laugh, as if she were hearing them for the first time. They had two daughters, Pamela Barbossa of Houston and Michelle Barbossa of Oakland. He taught them to love animals (especially horses and dogs), to be vigilant about their car maintenance and to understand how a football game works. He took extreme pride in his two grandchildren Morgan Eddleman (19) and Matthew Eddleman (17) of Phoenix for whom he would tell tall tales and make accompanying sound effects. He was thrilled when he met and held his great-grandson, Dakotah Covarrubias just 11 months ago.

Joe had a life-long love affair with pastry, pie, peanut butter and coffee. He was a creative photographer, cartoonist and writer. He excelled at engaging strangers, becoming friends, cheering up the inconsolable, mowing large swaths of land with a (small) riding mower, ‘testing’ multitudes of golf clubs, partaking in retail therapy involving any kind of gadget, watch or pen, supporting the automobile industry, and armchair coaching of the New York Giants. (He was, after all, a high school football star).

He took pride in his service during the Korean conflict, serving the rank of corporal. His military service and those he served with always held a special place in his heart. Though the war interrupted his college experience, he received his Bachelor of Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1959.

As a former Regional Sales Manager, his people skills and quick wit endeared him to all and brought him awards and success throughout his career. When Joe was traveling ‘about town’ in Montgomery or Conroe, his signature every day look was all his: a polo-style shirt (rarely wearing the same one twice), always tucked in with a belt to match his shoes, a carefully selected watch (thoughtfully procured at the local Target or Walmart) and always paired with his Korean War Veteran cap.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 24th at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (off FM 1774), 8227 County Rd 205 Plantersville, Texas 77363 with Fr. Ed Kucera as the celebrant. Internment will follow at St. Mary’s Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or The American Heart Association.
