WILLIAM CRAWFORD WALKER II

AUGUST 25, 1927 - APRIL 10, 2018

William Crawford Walker II, Bill to many, died peacefully on April the 10th of acute kidney failure. He had been in declining health for a year.

Bill, an avid and skilled golfer, was an unassuming man. He had quiet wisdom, a happy disposition, sharp wit and a disarming charm that could sell refrigerators to Eskimos standing elbow deep in snow. Good friend and fun-loving husband to Lorri for 68 years. Father to Robin Roth, William C. (Hap) III Major USMC deceased, Cassandra, Christiaan (Weegee) and Whitney. Grandfather of Blake, Michael, Olive and Midge. Great-grandfather of Pippa. Uncle to a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Bill was born in Urbana, Missouri and raised in Clinton, Missouri where his father Willis Ralph had the Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Dealership. It was there that Bill learned mechanical skills and love of cars which he passed on to his own sons. His mother Elsie Delcina was a devoted mother to her five boys: Oliver, Don, Roger, Bill and Ben. Ben of Pensacola, Florida is the only surviving brother.

Bill was drafted into the Army when he graduated from Clinton H.S. He served as a Medical Technician. Upon discharge from the service, he enrolled at the University of Missouri graduating with a degree in Marketing and Business. He joined Standard Oil Company, which then became American Oil progressed to Amoco International and then returned to Amoco USA. When he retired it was British Petroleum. He began several businesses in his “retirement”. First, a chain of transmission repair shops; then he established the first container depot at the Port of Houston. When that business was sold, he joined Strachan Shipping company as the Vice President of Marketing working there until his retirement to play golf full time.

Bill’s golf clubs never strayed far from his side. Thus, as he traveled about the world he played golf as he did “biness”. Golfing with someone can teach you a lot about a person’s character. A few years ago, he wrote a book about golf titled “The Road Map to a Great Golf Swing”. Up until six months ago, Bill was out on the course hitting the ball. His last of four holes in one was on April 8, 2016. Over the years, he was the club champion at the many clubs where he belonged. His swing was poetry in motion.

He is playing with the angels now. Some of whom have their halos askew.

A memorial service will be held on May 4, 2018 at 2 p.m. at St. James the Apostle Episcopal Church, Conroe, Texas.

In lieu of floral remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to William C. Hap Walker III Major USMC Endowment Fund, UH Army ROTC, 3875 Holman St. Ste.28, Houston, Texas 77204-6014 or St. James the Apostle Episcopal Church, 1803 Highland Hollow Drive, Conroe, Texas 77304.
