Obituary for Betty Eileen Campbell

Betty Eileen Culver Campbell joined the Lord on April 24, 2019 at the age of 94 in Montgomery, Texas. She was born May 21, 1924 in Warren Ohio. She was a talented artist and pursued a career in her early years and then became a loving wife to James Howard Campbell, whom she married on September 20, 1954. Together they raised their family in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

After high school Betty pursued her passion for art and photography at the Butler Art Institute in Youngstown, Ohio. She became the art editor for Peerless Electric’s magazine “Shop Talk”, eventually being promoted to the position of editor.

She met her husband-to-be, Jim, while playing in the company golf league. After a whirlwind courtship, Betty gave up her career, married and moved with Jim to New Mexico, where Jim served in the Air Force. Their first daughter, Susan, was born there. Following Jim’s military service they moved to Michigan, and two more daughters – Merrilee and Robin – were born.

Although Betty chose to focus on raising her daughters rather than continuing her career, she never lost her passion for the creative arts. She was an avid photographer, water colorist, and craftswoman, making sure her children had the opportunity to learn from her. Eventually, their homes would be filled with many things Betty had created.

Betty also became a devoted gardener and joined the Parchment Garden Club. She served in numerous positions over many years. Her flower gardens and her family were often the subjects of her art. She continued to pursue golf, travel and sharing her artistic skills with family and friends throughout her life.

In 2014, Betty moved to Texas to enjoy warmer weather and beautiful wild flowers. She made many new friends as a Texan, while always missing the joys of her family and friends in Michigan.

Surviving are her three daughters: Sue (Harry) Baldaccini, Merrilee (Doug) Gordon, and Robin (Greg) Burgamy; along with 5 grandchildren: Eric (Kayla) Baldaccini, Evan Baldaccini, Capt Lindsay Gordon (Capt John) Heisler, Drew Gordon, Jennifer Burgamy, and two great grandchildren.

Two celebrations of Betty’s life will be held:

An open house celebrating the life of Betty Culver Campbell will be held Monday, April 29 from 5:30-7pm at the Augusta McKay Library, 105 S. Webster Street, Augusta, Michigan. This will include an exhibit of watercolors by Betty. Refreshments will be served. A short memorial presentation will take place at 6 p.m.

A second celebration of Betty’s life will be held Saturday, May 25 from 3-6 pm at the home of Doug and Merrilee Gordon in Montgomery, Texas

Memorial donations may be made in Betty’s name to the American Cancer Society or the Michigan Garden Clubs, Parchment Chapter.
