Obituary for DONALD CATES

Donald Richard Cates of Katy, Texas passed away peacefully on December 30, 2017, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Donald was born on May 25, 1938, to Verna Hawkins Cates and Louis Cates of Grafton, Illinois. Sister Geraldine Wagner (Dick) Sister in law’s Donna Lane (Don) of Missouri, Betty Stone of Morris Illinois, Beverly Stone of Nebraska.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of fifty-five years, Helen Jeanne Cates, his mother and father in law Edward and Dorothy Stone, his brothers Charles and Leroy, brothers in law, Jerry Stone and John Stone, and sister in law Sandra Sue Stone. A precious granddaughter, Autumn Musachia, also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children Denise Moore of Texas City, Stephanie Macy (Kerry) of Katy, Texas, and Greg, of Suwanee GA. He also leaves behind a fiancée, Theresa Fallwell of Katy. Grandchildren include Justin Palermo (Erin) of Houston, Christian Musachia of Katy, Arianna and Gabriella Cecco, and Chad, Jillian and Makayla Lemaire all of Texas City, and Cash Cates of Indiana. Don was blessed with two great grandchildren, Audrey and Amelia Palermo. Three sisters also survive Donald. Geraldine Waggoner of Texas, Patsy Arnold (Paul) of Illinois, and Dotty Franz of Missouri.

Donald was a United States Air Force veteran and possessed an unequaled and vocal love for his country. His Air Force service was followed by creative work for McDonald Douglas Air Craft, as well as other flight groups. Donald was a pioneer in the burgeoning space industry as evidenced by his roles in the early Mercury and Gemini projects where he developed time/space sequences and communication devices for flight management. He also worked on later missions such as the Shuttle, as well as training astronauts to triangulate celestial markers to determine location in space. He was an avid fan of anything space or flight related and continued to research and explore ideas long after retirement. His work in the space industry found him living in California, Florida, and Texas.

Donald’s life as an amazing father, brother, husband, grandfather, friend, and patriot will be celebrated with a memorial to be announced at a later date. He will be sorely missed by many.
