Obituary for Daniel Arthur Vertrees

Daniel Arthur Vertrees was born on June 2, 1949 in Tacoma, Washington to Richard “Jim” and Shirley Vertrees. He grew up in Spokane, Washington where he graduated from Ferris High School in 1967. He then went onto Eastern Washington University where he met the love of his life, Debby. They graduated together in 1971 and married shortly after. Moving to many different states over the course of their marriage, Dan and Deb found their home here in Houston in 2000. Dan made his final journey peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior on March 30, 2019 at 69 years of age.
For almost 2 years, Dan fought courageously against cancer and far surpassed what most could have endured with sheer grace. His strength and determination during this time was a testament of the resilient man that he was. A true overcomer!
Dan was a beaming light full of love. He never met a stranger or had an enemy, and actively worked to spread his positivity throughout his life here on earth. He was humble, kind, and giving; and possessed the energy that everyone strives for. His business acumen, integrity and honesty made him a tremendous example and lasting mentor to so many.
Though Dan had a great career, the true loves of his life were his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Vertrees and is survived by his soulmate and wife Debby, of 47 years; their daughter Shelley Ault and husband Josh Ault, along with two grandchildren Hartford Reagan and Adelyn Danielle. Dan leaves behind his mother Shirley Vertrees, sister Louanne and husband Terry Resleff, with sons Mark and John. He also leaves sister-in-law Kitta and husband Dan Downend with sons Greg and Jeff; as well as sister-in-law Holly and husband Kent Hope with children Shay, Cami and Joel. They were his whole world, and he was theirs.
Dan was a devoted Christian who put his faith above all else, and demonstrated Christ-like values in everything he did. He and his wife loved their church family at Woodlands Church, and were the bright lights on the front row every weekend. His joy for the Lord inspired those around him, and spread vibrantly amongst the crowd in his presence.
Dan loved a busy life. He travelled throughout his career and loved meeting people and building relationships. With each new accomplishment, he moved his family to all corners of the United States and left lasting impressions on everyone he worked with or befriended. Dan started his career at Burroughs Corporation as a marketing representative. He worked his way up through many honorable titles and retired from Hewlett Packard as Vice President and General Manager for North America, Enterprise Channels & Alliances. After retirement, he resumed his very early career in commercial real estate and truly enjoyed working hard to make his clients happy. Every client became an honorable friend, and this embodied the true value he held in his friendships throughout life.
In his spare time, Dan enjoyed fishing, travel, time with family, home projects and involving himself in volunteer organizations. He spent countless hours working in the yard, and instilled his love for nature in everyone around him. He served on the legislative board of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and put everything he had into helping children in need. He also served on many other boards such as the HOA and the HP Diversity Board.
His contagious smile and everlasting positivity can now be seen from the Heavens above. Any remembrances are very much appreciated and can be contributed to CASA in his honor. He will be sincerely missed by all that knew and treasured him, and we know that he was beyond grateful to have so much love in his life. We are so blessed that God shared this amazing man with us for 69 years. He fought the fight and won the battle, as he is now home in the Lord’s mighty arms.
“Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
1 Corinthians 5:17
